South African cinema enthusiasts have a reason to celebrate with the release of Losing Lerato 2, which premiered on Netflix on August 2nd. This eagerly anticipated sequel to the acclaimed Losing Lerato continues the emotionally charged exploration of family and love that captivated audiences five years ago.

The original film introduced Thami, played by Kagiso Modupe, a divorced father grappling with the loss of access to his daughter, Lerato. In a desperate attempt to reconnect with her, Thami kidnaps Lerato, portrayed by his real-life daughter, Tshimillo Modupe. 

This intense father-daughter dynamic set the stage for a powerful narrative about love, sacrifice, and a parent’s fierce protection of their child. In Losing Lerato 2, the story shifts focus to explore the father-daughter relationship from a new angle. 

Kagiso Modupe, who stars and produces the film, shared with Daily Sun, “This time we see the love from the daughter’s perspective, a reversal from the first film where the love was centered on the father.” This fresh perspective promises to enrich the emotional depth of the narrative, offering audiences a deeper understanding of their evolving relationship.

The production encountered challenges, particularly with the tight schedule during the festive season. Actress Samela Tyelbooi, returning to her role, expressed her excitement about the project despite the pressures. “Filming during the end of the year, just before Christmas, was intense.
