Themba Zwane Comments On Rulani's Exit

Mamelodi Sundowns captain Themba Zwane has shared his thoughts on the departure of Rulani Mokwena during the off-season and his experience with new assistant coach Romain Folz. Zwane expressed optimism about the upcoming season, noting that the presence of Manqoba Mngqithi and Steve Komphela provides a sense of continuity within the team.

Mokwena has moved on from Sundowns to join Wydad Athletic Club in Botola Pro, while Komphela has returned as Senior First Team coach, and Mngqithi, whose role has not been officially confirmed, is expected to take on a Head Coach position.

“Of course, as players, we had to support each other and stay positive when we heard the news, understanding that changes are part of football,” Zwane said. “We need to respect the team’s decisions and keep encouraging each other to pursue our goal of competing for all trophies. The team’s spirit is good, and there’s a strong sense of camaraderie.”

Zwane also mentioned that despite the changes, there’s a sense of continuity with the coaching staff, and the new style of play introduced will benefit the team. Regarding Folz, who joined as an assistant coach during the pre-season in Austria, Zwane acknowledged that while Folz is still acclimating to the team, he has been impressed with his approach so far.

“He’s a sharp, knowledgeable coach, and though he’s been quiet so far, we expect him to become more integrated as time goes on,” Zwane noted at the MTN8 media launch this week. Sundowns will kick off their MTN8 campaign against Polokwane City at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium on Sunday, August 11, at 15:00.
